Enterprise Answers on the North West Family Business Awards

Enterprise Answers talk about their involvement in the North West Family Business Awards as sponsors (and a judge) of the People’s Choice – Lancashire category

NWFBA People’s Choice Award: Cumbria Judging, with Sponsors Cartmell Shepherd

Our People’s Choice award allows each region to vote for its favourite family business, with one winner chosen per region (Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester).

Cartmell Shepherd are our People’s Choice: Cumbria sponsors, and had the difficult task of judging our finalists. Here, Cartmell Shepherd talk about their role in the North West Family Business Awards.

NXT Recruitment talk about NWFBA2020 as sponsors of the Employee of the Year Category

Employees are the heart of business, as recruitment experts NXT know – which is why they are proudly sponsoring the Employee of the Year category

The independent recruitment agency, NXT, was founded in 2014 by directors Jason Hodgson and Simon Glencross, and they are long-time supporters of the region’s Family Business Network.

Based in Carlisle, they have previously sponsored the Cumbrian Employee of the Year award, and the expansion of the awards to cover the North West region has provided them with a new opportunity to raise the profile of more employees from across Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside, and Greater Manchester as well as Cumbria.

Simon said: “As a family business ourselves, we believe it is incredibly important to us to support platforms which promote and highlight family businesses and the significant role they play in society and the economy.

“Family businesses employ over 25% of the UK’s workforce, and this award commends those team members who go above and beyond.

“Working in the recruitment sector, we recognise the contribution of exceptional employees, which is why we are delighted to sponsor and judge the Employee of the Year category. Working across this region, we know the excellent employees we have in the area, working for great family firms of all shapes and sizes.

“As both a family business ourselves and a recruitment agency, we understand only too well that there is nobody more important in helping you to achieve the vision you have for your organisation than the team around you.

“Outstanding employees can transform a business; dramatically fast forward its growth; and be the key to its success. We cannot emphasise enough how excited we are to receive applications; and to meet and host the finalists.”

Simon, Jason and the team at NXT have a wealth of knowledge and experience in recruitment.

NXT is at the forefront of the regional recruitment sector and beyond, expanding their network of clients which includes both business and job seekers.

As part of the judging process, NXT invite those shortlisted for a ‘Meet the Judges’ day.

On the day, finalists will be accompanied by their line manager or the family business owners. They get to meet the judges, and will also be treated to a 3-course lunch at Rickerby Retreat Spa and Assembly Restaurant, Carlisle.

Nominated by their employer, the Employee of the Year is chosen by a combination of judges’ scores and public vote.

You can vote for your favourite employee from 17 February up until midday on the 5  March, the day before the awards ceremony in Manchester on 6 March 2020, by visiting The North West Family Business Awards website.

Founder and co-director of the Family Business Network, Sue Howorth said: “We would like to thank Simon and the team at NXT for their ongoing support and the extra mile they go to help make the Employee of the Year award so special.

“Their knowledge of the recruitment sector is second-to-none, making them the perfect sponsors and ideal judges for this award. We were also delighted to welcome Simon onto our main judging panel this year, where his experience and knowledge were really insightful. Along with the rest of the judging panel, he had some tough decisions to make!”

Co-Director of the Family Business Network Dave Clarkson added: “The dedication of our sponsors and judges make the Awards a unique, exceptional business awards event. They have a desire, as we do, to raise the profile of family businesses, and celebrate what they achieve for their customers, their employees and the UK’s economy.

“We would like to thank all the sponsors of this year’s North West Family Business Awards: NXT, Cartmell Shepherd, Enterprise Answers, Gorvins Solicitors, Lancaster University, Enterprise Answers, Be the Business, Hawkshead Relish, FW Capital,  Plus 3ktv, Chesworth Communications, Front Row Graphics, Miles Moore Ceramics, Lamont Pridmore, net*, Western Pensions, Cumbriashare, Lancashare and Mancheshare.

“We are looking forward to welcoming our sponsors and family businesses at the awards ceremony. This event is an excellent opportunity for family businesses to come together to recognise their successes and achievements.”

“With our host for the evening, food writer and presenter Nigel Barden, we will celebrate in first-class style at the Concorde Hangar at Manchester Airport’s Runway Visitor Centre, under the wings of Concorde. It is an evening not to be missed.”

Enterprise Answers sponsor People’s Choice Lancashire Family Business Award

Enterprise Answers have supported the Family Business Awards since they were founded back in 2017 and their expansion across the North West in 2020 is providing them with an opportunity to sponsor a new People’s Choice award for Lancashire.

Enterprise Answers – Grahame Latus

Grahame Latus, Chief Executive of Enterprise Answers, explained: “We are proud to be part of the North West Family Business Awards, as we are passionate about and believe in family businesses.

“The expansion of the Awards from Cumbria to across the North West allows us the opportunity to support businesses in Lancashire, where I was born and bred.

“I don’t think I will know any of the businesses who are entering, which makes this an exciting and interesting category for us to be involved in, as we can provide support to businesses in this area.

“I believe the public vote for this award is a lovely idea. It gives the public the opportunity to appreciate what I appreciate about family businesses — handing the power to the public and those who use their services.

“For me, this is more than just a business award. It is a celebration of family businesses. The Family Business Network is like a big family, and the awards night is our family reunion. It’s not about winning and beating the competition – it is about supporting and celebrating each other’s successes. It is like no other corporate business award. Everyone is a winner – and there are no losers in these awards.”

“It was through the Cumbria Family Business Awards I realised how many enterprises are family firms, and the different approach they have to a business that makes them so successful. Though Enterprise Answers is not a family business, these values have influenced how I work with my team and with our clients.

“Family Businesses play a significant part in the economy across the North West and the whole of the UK. Their ethos is different, and in turn, they treat their staff and customers differently. As a member of their team, you are part of that family, and in my experience, the employees are loyal to that family business.

“When the next generation come through, I have seen how important it is to let them go away to study and work with others. They return with not only knowledge and experience, but also a better appreciation of the business and the quality of life working in the family firm can give them.

Enterprise Answers is the only rural Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI) in the north of England. They are a sustainable, independent organisation providing financial services across the region, aiming to create social improvement and business development returns.

Created in 2004, they bridge the funding gap for businesses and entrepreneurs who are unable to draw on the main sources of finance for one reason or another. They also provide business guidance to their clients, and have successfully supported many small businesses to grow and develop into award-winning, established firms in a wide range of sectors including agriculture, tourism, hospitality, food and drink production.

Enterprise Answers works closely with numerous organisation throughout the region to ensure that businesses have easy access to a full range of support services wherever they are based.

Grahame added: “If no one is prepared to take a risk with those businesses who present a marginal proposition to banks or who may lack the security required, then we lose the potential and diversity that creative and talented individuals and businesses bring to the region.

“Many of our clients are family businesses who have gone on to be successful, award-winning businesses.”

Founder and co-director of the North West Family Business Awards, Sue Howorth said: “The People’s Choice Lancashire award is open to family businesses of all sizes. The judges’ scores, together with the public vote, will determine the winner of the People’s Choice Lancashire Award 2020.

“You can vote for your favourite firm from 17 February up until the day before the awards ceremony in Manchester on 6 March 2020 by visiting The North West Family Business Awards website.”

Co-director of The North West Family Business Awards, Dave Clarkson said: “We would like to thank Enterprise Answers and all our sponsors of this year’s inaugural North West Family Business Awards. These include, alongside Enterprise Answers; Cartmell Shepherd, NXT Recruitment, Gorvins Solicitors, Lancaster University, Enterprise Answers, Be the Business, Hawkshead Relish, FW Capital, Chesworth Communications, Front Row Graphics, Miles Moore Ceramics, Lamont Pridmore, net*, Western Pensions, Cumbriashare, Lancashare and Mancheshare.

“With our host for the evening, food writer and presenter Nigel Barden, we will celebrate in first-class style at the Concorde Hanger at Manchester Airport’s Runway Visitor Centre, under the wings of Concorde. It is an evening not to be missed.”

Cartmell Shepherd sponsor People’s Choice Cumbria Family Business Award

Cumbrian based solicitors Cartmell Shepherd are asking the public to help them find the North West Family Business Awards ‘People’s Choice’ for the county. And this Wednesday, 5 February they will be holding their meet the judges’ day.

Cartmell Shepherd – Peter Stafford

Originally a family firm themselves, Cartmell Shepherd has supported the Cumbrian Family Business awards since 2018, previously sponsoring the large hotel and leisure category, and are key partners of The Family Business Network. Now with the expansion into the North West, they are looking forward to this new award involving a public vote.

Peter Stafford, Cartmell Shepherd’s Managing Director, explained: “We really want to support businesses in Cumbria. We like the public involvement element in this award, as it opens-up the category to all businesses, making it much more inclusive. It gives people the opportunity to vote for the businesses they use and appreciate.

“Cumbria is a big county in size, if one of the smallest in population, and we are keen to be involved in an award which gives everyone an equal opportunity.

“You could be a small, family-run corner shop or large manufacturer that offers excellent service, and if your customers want to see your business recognised, they can vote for you.

“We work with many family businesses across Cumbria, and I am looking forward to hearing about many more through this award.

“Family businesses are some of the biggest employers in the county. This award is special, as it isn’t just about winning; it is about showcasing Cumbria.

“Cumbria is so diverse, with two World Heritage Sites – Borderlands and the Lake District, plus the Eden Valley, West Cumbria, Carlisle and Barrow all offering their own unique opportunities. We hope our award will show Cumbria has the Lake District and much more.”

“Through this award, we can help raise the profile of Cumbria, and show what a great place it is to do business and have a great work-life balance.

Founder and co-director of the North West Family Business Awards, Sue Howorth said: “The People’s Choice Cumbria award is open to family businesses of all sizes. The judges’ scores, together with the public vote, will determine the winner of the People’s Choice Cumbria Award 2020.
