Farrall’s Group Crowned North West Family Business of the Year

On Friday 13th May, Farrall’s Group joined family businesses from across the region at The Rum Warehouse in Liverpool’s Iconic Titanic Hotel to celebrate at the North West Family Business Awards 2022.

A capacity crowd of over 400 gathered on the night to see the winners of the region’s best family businesses revealed, including representatives from over 60 family business finalists, plus judges, sponsors and event hosts Sue Howorth, Dave Clarkson and food writer and presenter, Nigel Barden.

It was a night for celebrations all round but in particularly for 3rd Generation Family Business Farrall’s Group as they took home the Haulage & Logistics title before being crowned the overall North West Family Business of the Year.

Matthew Farrall, Managing Director of Farrall’s Group commented, “We were so honoured to have won the Haulage & Logistics award and then to have been chosen as this year’s overall winners – to say we are over the moon is an understatement!”

He added, “I am so proud to work alongside my family and to continue my Grandad’s vision for Farrall’s Group. We have great support from our team who work day in, day out to offer our customers exceptional service and allow us to sustainably grow.

“These awards are all down to their hard work, determination and the pride they take in their roles. It isn’t easy to build a team of fantastic individuals who you can trust to represent your family name, but we are incredibly lucky to have a team who embodies our family values to the core. So to each member of Team FG past and present who have helped shape our business into the great family business that it is today, thank you!”

Catering for businesses of all sizes and across a diverse set of industries, Farrall’s Group provide expert logistics and warehousing solutions across the UK and Europe. Being one of the leading businesses in their sector, they are well known for their reliability and exceptional customer service.

This is a family firm with a real story to tell, starting out back in 1956 when Eddie and Joan made the choice to buy a lorry instead of getting married, founding Edwin C Farrall Transport. Since that day the business has gone from strength to strength and is now moving into the third generation, with exponential growth beyond Eddie and Joans’ wildest dreams. The business now includes a fleet of 70 vehicles, three warehouses, a vehicle workshop and over 120 employees who are integral to their success and keep the business moving forward.

Sue Howorth, Awards Co-Founder said, “This year the standard of entries was incredibly high and we know that our judges had their work cut out to choose the winners!”

“Each one of our winners are truly outstanding family businesses, leading the way in their sectors with strong family business values. They should be very proud of their achievements!”

Dave Clarkson, Awards Co-Founder commented, “We wanted this year’s awards to be something really special and we’re delighted with how it came together on the night. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate the family business sector across the North West.”

We’d like to thank all our judges and events team for their incredible hard work, our sponsors for their support and to everyone who entered the awards this year!”

Askam’s Harry Barker Properties Ltd reaches finals of North West Family Business Awards

Harry Barker Properties Ltd is a company that specialises in all stages of groundworks, house utilisation and deliver projects for major clients.

Founded in 1978 in Askam by Harry Barker Senior, the company has grown into the successful enterprise it is today in the community.

Lucy Barker from HBP said: “In 2022, we are proud to remain a family run business led by our current Managing Director Harry Barker since 2000.

“The business has been running for over 40 years and was formed following a conversation in Harry’s local pub The Bay Horse in Askam in Furness with his friend Tom Butler. Tom had mentioned that a utility agent was looking for a Grab Wagon to cover the Cumbria area removing spoil and backfilling all utility trenches.

“Harry replied “I have an expert Grab Wagon Driver” which unbeknown to Harry Junior was him. The next day Harry and his son went and bought a Grab Wagon and they started working for various utility companies across the North West. Over the years this went from one grab wagon to ten at its peak.

“Since Harry has taken over, he has grown the business from just him and his father to 50+ employees offering a wide range of services from Groundworks, Housing Developments, Plant and Machinery Hire, Aggregate supplies, and spoil removal from our own Quarry in Askam and today we are still providing utility companies with our Grab wagons.

“We have never been nominated for any awards previously and have never attended an awards ceremony.

“The whole team was honoured to make the final of the North West Family Business Awards and we thoroughly enjoyed the judging process and the night. We are unsure in particular about what led us to being shortlisted but we probably stood out with our efforts, donations, and sponsorships within the local community.

We work extensively within the local community with both sponsorship and charity work. We believe that working with those who are closest to us is an important part of the family values which we run our business by.”

Our sponsorships and donations are all proudly displayed on our website. Some of these include:

The sponsorship of local sport teams: We sponsor both Askam Rugby team and the Football team. Our sponsorship has helped with the season kits, training equipment and refurbishment of the changing rooms. As a result of our sponsorship of Askam United Football Club the club has gone from being without junior teams to five and having over 100 players signed on with 12 coaches at the club.”

“We also donate to a chosen charity every Christmas. Most recently being Barrow Food Bank and new toys to The Salvation Army Christmas Toy appeal.

“Something that is specifically important to us for our future is maintaining our high-quality service and developing on our reliable reputation as groundworks contractors in Cumbria. Our family values are reflected throughout our business and we will continue to make this stand out in our working environment.

“HBP would like to give a special thanks to all current and previous staff for their commitment and hard work they put into our family business to make it what it is.”

Family Business Awards crowns regional champions in front of capacity crowd

Family businesses from across the North West celebrated in spectacular style at The North West Family Business Awards on Friday night at the Rum Warehouse in Liverpool’s iconic Titanic Hotel.

The city’s historic Stanley Docks was the setting for the sell out 2022 Awards, organised by The Family Business Community. The North West Family Business Awards celebrate family businesses of all sizes and sectors covering Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

A capacity crowd of over 400 gathered on the night to see the winners of the region’s best family businesses revealed, including representatives from over 60 family business finalists, plus judges, sponsors and event hosts Sue Howorth, Dave Clarkson and food writer and presenter, Nigel Barden.

The Awards opened with an energetic dance sequence from the Liverpool-based Leah McDonald School of Dance, which was followed by a three-course meal and lively entertainment from Lord of the Dance fiddler player, Richard Sanderson.

Organisers of the event, Sue Howorth and Dave Clarkson said, “We wanted this year’s awards to be something really special and we’re delighted with how it came together on the night. Our Awards is anything but a run of the mill business awards – it’s a celebration of the ecosystem that is family business!”

They added, “There was such an appetite for the Awards this year and the atmosphere and buzz in the room was electric. The week before, we had to close ticket sales as we’d completely sold out!”

“What was also nice this year was that over 80% of applicants were completely new to us, so it was great to meet lots of new family businesses and welcome them into our family business community”.

Among the winners was Chester-based Farrall’s Group, who won the Haulage and Logistics category before taking the crown of overall North West Family Business of the Year.

It isn’t easy to build a team of fantastic individuals who you can trust to represent your family name, but we are incredibly lucky to have a team who embodies our family values to the core.”

The twenty-strong team of Awards judges had a difficult task, with a large number of high quality entries from across the North West region. Collectively they also chose their own winner for the special Judges Award, announced on the night as Lancashire firm, Mantle Packaging.

Laura Sieczkowski, Managing Director of Mantle Packaging said, “We can’t thank the Awards team enough. On the anniversary of our 25th year in business and in the week that I officially became Managing Director, to also win the Judges Award is beyond anything we could imagine.

“We are absolutely delighted as a family and for my parents to receive that recognition just as they retire is the best feeling ever. The night itself was fabulous and we all had a wonderful time. The North West Family Business Awards are such a special thing to be part of.”

In addition to the main categories, the People’s Choice awards invited nominations for finalists from the public, and this year over 15,000 votes were placed for finalists across the five counties, as well as a further 4,500 votes for the Employee of the Year category won by Michelle Mooney of G&J Shuttleworth in Morecambe.

One of the Sponsors attending the Awards, Martin Rankin of The Cumberland commented, “We’re pleased to have played a part in making sure our region’s family businesses receive the recognition they deserve. The event was a real celebration of family business values and ethos”.

Dave Clarkson of the North West Family Business Awards added, “We’d like to thank all our judges and events team for their incredible hard work, our sponsors for their support and to everyone who entered the awards this year!”
