A MULTI-award-winning Kendal family business has been praised at the North West Family Business awards.
Penningtons Tea & Coffee Ltd, located on the Kendal business park on Appleby Road, is an ethically sourced speciality coffee wholesale and supply shop.
The company was awarded with the best food and drink producer at the awards, thanks to their combination of high-quality products and customer service.
Owned and operated by Gina and Dave Pennington, the business has built a strong reputation in the area since opening four years earlier.
Gina said: “During the awards we were actually up against our friends at Shed 1 Distillery. We didn’t expect to win but it was really nice to come away with it. It was amazing when they called out us out for the award. We originally applied and won the people’s choice award before lockdown, but then the world went into chaos so things got put on hold. This was back in March 2020, so we entered again and got nominated. Then we found out we were finalists in the beginning of April.”
“It was on May, Friday 13, a lucky day for us! We got started back in May 2018. Covid wasn’t the best time for us but we got a massive amount of support from so many people.
Everyone was working from home, we had grants to help us and we managed to come through. It was hard for all businesses but when the lakes opened again it was so busy for us.
I originally moved up to Kendal in 1990 from Oxford so I’ve been here about 32 years. More Cumbrian than not by now. My husband Dave is born and bred in Kendal. For our future it’s nice to be recognised and that people are seeing what we are doing. It’s like a pat on the back and it’s great thing to have for the future. We even bumped into a few friends while we were there.”
“Being in a family business is like having a lovely network of support where everyone has the same problems and the same goals. We’ve got me, Dave, and two members of staff but we are hoping to extend that in the future. To everyone, please come down and visit us anytime.”
